Pest-control software buyer's guide: what actually matters

Specialist or generic?

Generic CRMs and field-service tools can be configured for pest control, but you become the product designer: custom fields for treatments, workarounds for recurring visits, integrations for signatures. Specialist software ships with those workflows built in. The honest trade-off: generic tools have bigger ecosystems; specialist tools fit on day one.

A quick test — ask the vendor how a quarterly contract rebooks itself, and how a technician records materials used at the door. If the answer starts with 'you can build that', it's a generic tool.

The five capabilities that matter

Almost everything else is decoration. Check these five against a real week of your work:

• ✓Customer records per property, with full treatment history.

Questions to ask about money

Ask what the software costs at your real team size, whether there's a contract or notice period, and — critically — whether the vendor takes a percentage of your customer payments. A monthly fee you can cancel is a tool; a revenue share is a partner you didn't choose.

How to run a fair trial

Don't evaluate software by clicking around an empty account. Import (or type in) ten real customers, book a real week, and have one technician run one real day on their phone. You'll know within a week whether the system fits how you actually work — which is exactly why trials without a credit card matter.
